Assignment 4: Project/Thesis Proposal


Due Date: Sept 16, 2017

Overview
Each group is required to write a proposal over their top project choice. Proposals will cover what you are interested in, why you want to work on that project, and how you will carry out the project's development and evaluation.


Format
For students doing their undergraduate thesis follow these guidelines: URS Application

For everyone else follow the guidelines below:

Introduction and Motivation:
  • Which project has your team chosen?
  • Why do you want to work on this project?
  • Explain the importance of your proposed design.
Project Plan:
  • Provide a general overview of your development tasks and their breakdown.
  • Provide the answers to any project-specific questions.
  • Explain initial architecture and its components.
Team Bio:
  • For each team member, list relevant prior coursework, experience, and programming languages/toolkits that qualify you for this project.
  • What contribution can each of you make to this project?
Research Benefits:
  • Intellectual Merit - How important is the proposed activity to advancing knowledge and understanding within its own field or across different fields? To what extent does the proposed activity suggest and explore creative and original concepts?
  • Broader Impact - How well does the activity advance discovery and understanding while promoting teaching, training, and learning? How well does the proposed activity broaden the participation of underrepresented groups (e.g., gender, ethnicity, disability, geographic, etc.)? To what extent will it enhance the infrastructure for research and education, such as facilities, instrumentation, networks, and partnerships? Will the results be disseminated broadly to enhance scientific and technological understanding? What may be the benefits of the proposed activity to society?
Hardware and software components:
  • What hardware will you be using out of the supplied list for this project? Justify your selection.
  • What additional hardware is desired by your project team? Justify your selection. Make sure that your project can function without these additions as they may not be obtainable.
  • What software libraries/toolkits will you be using for this project? Justify your selection.

Assignment 5: Gantt Chart

Due Date:  Sept 25, 2017 Overview A Gantt chart is a type of chart designed to help teams plan out projects. In this class students will need to create their own Gantt chart to plan out their project over the course of the semester. Format A Gantt chart template can be found here: Gantt chart template . You can choose to use this particular template or another one you find. Only one Gantt chart is required per team; if you are working with more than one person make sure that work is divided up amongst group members. Furthermore try and avoid situations where one team member is waiting for a long time for the work of another team member with nothing else to do. Upload the completed Gantt chart to the Google Drive folder of at least one team member.

Assignment 2: Introductory Blog/Google Drive Access

Due Date:  Sept 4, 2017 Overview Throughout the semester you will be writing short blogs in order to keep track of assigned readings and your project's development. Maintaining a blog will help you stay organized and to continually analyze your work. Using a digital artifact instead of a paper-based journal affords communication with other students and quicker recall of past assignments/updates. You will set up a blog for the course and write a short introductory entry. Format Before you can begin writing your blog posts for the class, you obviously need to have a blog set up. While there are several blogging services available, it's recommended that everyone uses the Blogger  service for consistency. If you are new to using Blogger, then follow the steps below to set up your own blog on Blogger. Go to  Blogger  and log in with your Google account credentials.
